SPIEF-2025. Unique rock will be mined in Karelia
A tuffite mining and processing enterprise will be opened in the Kondopozhsky District. It was announced by the Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The agreements were reached with the company “Gabozerskoye”. The investments in the project will amount to at least 900 million rubles.
On June 18, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov signed an agreement with the director of the OOO “Gabozerskoye” Denis Smirnov. The purpose of the agreement is cooperation in creating an enterprise for the extraction and processing of tuffites at the subsoil site “Gorely Bor” in the Kondopozhsky District.
Tuffite is a unique volcanic sedimentary rock. It is used in construction as a filter material for wastewater treatment, for production of mineral wool and expanded clay, foam glass and other products as well as for medicine and pharmacology.
In our country, tuffite is not mined on an industrial scale. Only small amounts are mined for sharpening stones production. A study of tuffites from the deposit “Gorely Bor” showed that the material is suitable for mineral wool production.
– Extraction and production from tuffites will become another area of development of the mining industry of Karelia. This material is interesting from the point of view of its physical and mechanical properties and a wide range of applications, from construction industry to medicine and pharmacology, – noted Artur Parfenchikov.
The total investment in implementation of the enterprise project will be at least 900 million rubles. About 100 new jobs will be created for the residents. The start of industrial production is planned for February 2026, and achievement of the design capacity will be in February 2027. The company will purchase 20 units of quarry equipment for the enterprise.
– Tuffites are the future of construction. In terms of strength and frost resistance, this rock is comparable to gabbro-diabase, – said Denis Smirnov, the director of the OOO “Gabozerskoye”.
OOO “Gabozerskoye” is a part of the GK “Vologodskoye Karjernoye Upravleniye”. Its main activities are extraction and production of sand and sand-gravel mixture, production of crushed stone from gravel as well as production of mortar and concrete.
